Designers rarely arrive asking for limewash by name. They arrive with a photo: soft mottled walls, a chalky matte surface, cloudy movement across a dining room or a boutique, the look that gets described as organic modern, wabi sabi, Mediterranean or warm minimalism. What produces the limewash look
True limewash is slaked lime, water and mineral pigment, brushed on in cross-hatched coats. It soaks into the substrate and cures into it, which is what gives the finish its chalky, velvety matte surface and the cloud-like variation that flat paint cannot reproduce. The same visual family includes lime paint, mineral paints and thin clay or lime plasters with a brushed or troweled texture. We work across all of them and choose by how the wall will be used, not by what a tin is called.

Limewash look FAQ
Is limewash durable enough for a restaurant or a store?
Yes, when it is specified for it. On its own limewash is a soft, chalky finish. For dining rooms, retail and reception areas we apply a breathable matte sealer that makes the surface wipeable without adding sheen, and we recommend a brushed lime plaster in the highest-contact zones such as corridors at hip height.
Can limewash be sealed and still look chalky?
Yes. We use matte mineral sealers that leave the chalky, cloudy look intact. Gloss or film-forming sealers are what ruin limewash, and we do not use them.
Can you match our brand colour?
Yes. Send a paint code, a swatch or a reference image and we mix and sample it on site. Because limewash dries lighter and moves in tone, approval always happens on a dry sample board in your lighting.
What is the difference between limewash and roman clay or lime paint?
Limewash is brushed and soaks into the wall, giving the cloudiest, softest look. Lime and mineral paints are similar chemistry with a slightly more uniform result. Clay and lime plasters in the same family are troweled, so they carry texture and body and stand up better to contact. We can show all three side by side.
Does limewash work on drywall, or only on brick and plaster?
It works on primed drywall, which is most of our commercial work, as well as on brick, block, cement board and existing plaster. The primer is what makes it work on drywall.
How is limewash maintained and touched up?
Dust or wipe with a damp cloth. Marks are touched up with the recorded tint and blend in because the finish is naturally variegated, which is something flat paint cannot do.
