Limestone, Sandstone, Cast Stone and Marble Looks, Troweled Seamlessly
Stone effect plaster for feature walls, columns, lobbies, fireplaces and fixtures in Ottawa. The character of natural stone at a few millimetres thick, with no cladding, no joints and no structural work.
Stone look walls are the broadest family of finishes we produce. A limestone look reads soft, chalky and monolithic. A sandstone look carries fine grit and warmth. A cast stone or precast look is smooth and architectural with subtle tonal shifts. A rammed earth look is banded and stratified. A marble or marmorino look is polished, veined and luminous. All of them are made from lime and marble plasters, worked by hand over drywall, block, MDF or existing tile, and all of them are seamless. If you are searching for stone effect plaster in Ottawa, faux stone wall finish, plaster that looks like stone, or a lightweight alternative to stone cladding, start here. For the travertine family specifically, see travertine look walls.
The stone looks we produce
Limestone look
Soft, matte, fine-grained and chalky, in French limestone creams, Indiana greys and warm putty tones. The most requested stone look for lobbies and feature walls.
Sandstone look
Warm, granular and lightly textured, from pale sand to ochre. Works well with timber and brass in retail and hospitality.
Cast stone and precast look
Smooth, cool and architectural, with the subtle mottling of cast material. Sits between limestone and our concrete look.
Rammed earth and strata look
Horizontal bands of layered earth tones, troweled in sequence. A strong feature wall behind a reception desk or a bar.
Marmorino and marble look
Marmorino, the classic Venetian lime and marble plaster (often spelled marmoreno or marmarino), burnished anywhere from a soft honed stone to a mirror polish, with or without veining. Entryways, powder rooms, columns, lobbies. See Venetian plaster.
Worn and aged stone look
Weathered, hand-hewn and old-world stone textures for restaurants, wine rooms and heritage-style interiors.
Marmorino: the plaster behind most stone looks
Ask a designer for a stone look wall and the material under it is usually marmorino. It is the traditional Venetian plaster made from slaked lime and finely ground marble, applied with a steel trowel in two or three thin coats and then compressed, or burnished, until the surface tightens. Burnish it lightly and it reads as honed limestone or sandstone. Burnish it hard and it reads as polished marble. Leave trowel movement in it and it reads as cast stone. That range is why one material can produce most of the looks on this page. Clients and designers spell it marmorino, marmoreno and marmarino; it is the same plaster, and we answer to all three.
Two close relatives are worth knowing. Grassello is a finer, more marble-rich version that takes the highest polish and the deepest colour, used when the reference is glossy stone or a mirror-like feature wall. Travertino is a coarser mix worked to reproduce the pitting and banding of travertine. All three are lime-based, breathable, hard-wearing once sealed, and repairable in place, which is what separates them from acrylic “faux stone” paints that sit on the surface and chip.
Marmorino
Medium grain, honed to satin. Limestone, sandstone and cast stone looks. The workhorse for lobbies and feature walls.
Grassello
Fine grain, high polish. Marble, onyx and polished stone looks with the most depth and reflection.
Travertino
Coarse grain, dragged and pitted. The travertine look, vein-cut or cross-cut. Travertine look page.

For designers, architects and commercial teams
Stone look plaster is the answer to a familiar problem: the concept calls for limestone, cast stone or a monolithic stone wall, and the building, the budget or the schedule cannot carry real stone. We work from your stone sample or reference image, match tone, grain and scale on a board, and apply the finish seamlessly across the elevation including columns, curves and bulkheads. It photographs as stone, it is sealed for cleaning, and it is repaired in place. We also finish desks, hoods and fixtures in the shop when that suits the millwork schedule, and our Toronto team repeats the finish for GTA locations.
- Sample boards matched to a stone sample or reference image
- Spec support, mock-ups and finish schedule language
- Seamless across columns, arches, curved walls and ceilings
- Shop-finished panels and fixtures where the schedule needs them
- Sealed, wipeable surfaces for lobbies and retail
- Consistent finish across Ottawa and Toronto locations

Stone look FAQ
What is stone effect plaster?
A lime and marble based plaster, troweled by hand in layers and worked to reproduce the colour, grain and surface of a specific stone. Depending on the technique it can read as limestone, sandstone, cast stone, rammed earth or marble. It is applied a few millimetres thick over your existing walls.
What is marmorino, and is marmoreno the same thing?
Same plaster, different spelling. Marmorino is the traditional Venetian plaster of slaked lime and marble dust, troweled in thin coats and burnished to anywhere between a honed limestone and a polished marble. It is the base for most of our stone and marble looks. Marmoreno and marmarino are common spellings of the same thing.
Is it a realistic alternative to limestone cladding?
For interior walls, yes. It gives the monolithic, jointless look that cladding cannot, it weighs almost nothing, and it is installed in days rather than weeks. Where a design genuinely needs the depth of dimensional stone at a corner or a base, we can pair the two.
Can you match a specific stone sample?
Yes. Tone, grain, banding and surface texture are matched on a sample board and approved before any site work.
Does the stone look work on curved walls and columns?
Yes. Curves and columns are where plaster beats every other option, because there are no units to cut and no joints to hide.
How durable is it in a lobby or a store?
Sealed stone effect plaster is wipeable and resists scuffing well. In the highest-contact areas we use a harder, denser plaster and a matching topcoat. Damage is spot-repaired and blended in place.
What does a stone look feature wall cost?
It depends on the stone being matched, the area, the substrate and the detail. We quote from drawings or a site visit and the quote includes sample boards.
