Not All Venetian Plaster Is the Same
When it comes to improving the appearance of your home or business, Venetian Plaster is a stunning option that can transform any space. Venetian plaster on walls and ceilings is becoming increasingly popular in Ottawa, where architectural charm meets modern elegance, thanks to its timeless appeal and high-quality finish.
Venetian plaster is a versatile material made from slaked lime and marble dust that produces a range of finishes, from matte stone to glossy marble that resembles natural stone.
Its application necessitates the use of trained artisans who use traditional techniques to create stunning textures and subtle color changes, thereby adding depth and character to your walls and ceiling.
One of the most distinctive features of Venetian plaster is its ability to transform ordinary surfaces into works of art. Whether you want to add Old-World elegance to a historic property in Ottawa’s bustling areas or create a sophisticated backdrop for modern décor in a downtown condo, Venetian plaster has endless possibilities.
Venetian plaster is both durable and easy to maintain, making it ideal for high-traffic areas like living rooms, corridors, and even restrooms. Its natural composition also enhances indoor air quality, making it an excellent choice for your home or business.
By using Venetian plaster on your walls and ceilings in Ottawa, you not only add elegance and beauty to your space, but you also invest in a timeless finish that will stand the test of time, reflecting the city’s rich architectural heritage and contemporary flair.
Marmorino, grassello or travertino: which Venetian plaster do you need?
“Venetian plaster” is a family, not one product, and the name a designer gives us usually tells us which member of the family the reference photo is. Marmorino (clients often spell it marmoreno or marmarino) is the medium-grain lime and marble plaster that most people picture: troweled in thin coats and burnished to a satin, it reads as honed limestone, sandstone or soft marble, and it is the workhorse for feature walls, lobbies and columns. Grassello is the finest grade, with more marble and less body, and it takes the highest polish and the deepest colour: this is the mirror-like marble look. Travertino is the coarsest, worked with a dragged trowel to reproduce the pits and bands of travertine. All three are breathable, hard-wearing once sealed, and repairable in place, which is what separates them from acrylic “faux” finishes that sit on the surface and chip.
If you are not sure which one your reference calls for, send us the photo. We will tell you which plaster it is, sample it on a board, and show you how far the polish and colour can be pushed before you commit. See also our stone and limestone look, travertine look and concrete look pages.
Venetian Plaster vs. Limewash vs. Microcement
What it looks like:
– Stone
– Marble
– Concrete
– Rock-like
– Metallic
Lime plaster actually coats your walls with a layer of material that will revert back to stone when it dries.
We recommend Venetian plaster depending on the function of the surface and the space in general.
For our clients in Ottawa, we typically apply venetian plaster to the following areas:
– Feature walls in the bedroom and living room and fireplaces
– Retail stores and storefront businesses
– Clinics and wellness centers
– Range Hoods
– Powder rooms/bathrooms
– Front Desk Walls
– In restaurants, depending on the traffic
– Luxury residential and commercial developments
Is venetian plaster durable?
Yes, assuming the plaster material is at least good quality.
The prep work, application, and protection are what ensure your venetian plaster will last for decades.
For prep work, we recommend having high-quality drywall patching sanded and primed with a high-quality sealer.
For application, we recommend working with experienced artisans and applicators (i.e., Venetian Plaster Ottawa).
For protection, we recommend applying a sealer depending on the level of sheen you desire.

What Is Venetian Plaster?
Venetian plaster is a lime and marble-dust plaster applied with a steel trowel in thin, overlapping layers. Each pass is compressed into the one below, which is what gives the finish its depth and its stone-like feel. Burnished, it reads as polished marble. Left matte, it reads as limestone, concrete or travertine.
It is the finish we reach for when a space needs to look and feel like solid stone without the weight, the joints or the lead time. Fireplaces, range hoods, lobbies, columns, stairwells and full feature walls are where it does its best work.
- Natural lime and marble, breathable and low odour
- Hard-wearing surface that improves with age
- Any colour, three sheen levels, smooth to heavily textured
- Applied over drywall, plaster, MDF, concrete and most millwork
How a Venetian plaster wall is built
Bonding primerA gritted primer gives the plaster something to grip, on drywall, millwork or existing paint.
Base coatTrowelled on to set the texture and even out the surface.
Finish coatsTwo or more thin layers, each compressed into the last. This is where the depth, colour movement and pattern come from.
BurnishThe trowel is dragged flat over the surface to bring up sheen. Light burnish for satin, heavy for polished marble.
Sealer or waxProtects kitchens, bathrooms, hoods and commercial surfaces. Optional elsewhere.

Have a reference image?
Send the photo. We will tell you which plaster produces that look, make a physical sample, and price it per square foot from your dimensions.
Finishes, Sheens and Looks
Venetian plaster is not one product. The look is set by the type of plaster, how it is trowelled and how far it is burnished. These are the three sheen levels we work in.
Designers usually brief us with a material rather than a finish. Start with the look you need and we will tell you which plaster produces it:
Any colour can be matched. Samples are made for your light and approved before we start, and the full range is on the wall at our Ottawa showroom.
Venetian Plaster Pricing in Ottawa
Project minimum $3,500 to $4,000. That covers site protection, colour matching, sampling and the set-up every job needs regardless of size. Fireplaces and range hoods are usually priced as a fixed scope rather than by the foot.
What moves the price
- Type of plaster: smooth matte is the entry point; textured stone, travertine and polished marble take more coats and more time
- Sheen: polished finishes are burnished by hand and sit at the top of the range
- Colour: deep or custom-matched colours need extra layers
- Surface: ceilings, double-height walls, curves, columns and stairwells need access equipment and more labour
- Wet areas: kitchens, bathrooms and hoods are sealed
- Condition and location: repairs are quoted separately; outside Ottawa adds travel

Venetian Plaster Ottawa FAQ
How much does Venetian plaster cost in Ottawa?
Applied Venetian plaster runs $15 to $35 per square foot including materials, with a project minimum of $3,500 to $4,000. Smooth matte finishes sit at the low end; textured stone, travertine and polished marble finishes sit at the high end. Fireplaces and range hoods are usually quoted as a fixed price. Send photos and dimensions for an exact number.
Is Venetian plaster durable?
Yes. Cured lime plaster is harder than paint and does not peel or chip under normal use. It can be sealed for kitchens, bathrooms and commercial areas, and small damage can be repaired and blended by hand.
What is the difference between Venetian plaster and limewash?
Venetian plaster is trowelled on in layers and has physical depth, texture and sheen. Limewash is brushed on as a thin mineral wash and stays soft, flat and cloudy. If you want a stone, marble or concrete look, you want plaster. If you want a soft painted look, you want limewash.
Can Venetian plaster go on a range hood or fireplace?
Yes. Both are among our most common projects. The hood or surround is framed or built in millwork, primed, plastered and sealed. The plaster is heat-tolerant around a firebox and wipeable around a cooktop.
Can it be applied over existing paint or tile?
Over sound painted drywall and plaster, yes, with a bonding primer. Over tile we usually recommend microcement, which is designed for that.
How long does a project take?
A fireplace or hood takes two to three days. A feature wall takes two to four days. Larger rooms and commercial spaces are scheduled around your other trades.
Do you work outside Ottawa?
Yes. Kanata, Orleans, Barrhaven, Manotick, Carleton Place, Almonte, Kemptville, Rockland, Perth and the Ottawa Valley, plus a Toronto crew for GTA projects.
